Well this is a pleasant surprise. I actually just wrote long essay on this very topic titled "The Locomotive as a Metaphor for Modernity." Although, I focused more on it as a vehicle for ideology, and how various early-20th century groups fought for the 'soul of modernity' through the locomotive metaphor.
